Our Trip To Cupcake Heaven...

Well, it started out as a typical afternoon for sure.  I picked the kids up from school, we chatted in the van about their days and enjoyed the music on the radio.  We had a very busy night ahead of us with homework, dinner, piano practice, spelling tests to study for, and a meeting at the Fire Department.  Because the evenings are so busy, I rarely make any stops on the way home from school.  Yesterday afternoon however, I spontaneously decided to stop at Pixie Cakes, a new gourmet cupcake and cakery near our home.  I've wanted to stop there many times, but hadn't had the opportunity to do so yet.  I needed a special gift, so I gave it more than a passing glance this time.

The cakery is inside of a quaint old Catholic church that had closed it's doors a few years back.  A Parishioner of the church ended up buying it and opening up a scrap booking shop on the main level and renting out the lower level to the other business.  The minute you open the main door of the building you can smell the sweet aromas of the cakery wafting up from the lower level.  If you look up the stairs you can see the stained glass windows peeking over the tops of the racks of specialty papers, stickers, and other delightful scrap booking supplies of the main shop.  As inviting as it was to take a look-see into that shop, what we needed was to the left and down a few stairs.  So, down we went.

The kids were a bit hesitant, as they always are when something is new to them.  We walked through the bakery door to a bright, cheery little shop with crystal clear, domed display cases filled with the fresh confections of the day.  Looking around we could also see other specialty items as well.  On a high counter were organic soaps and cleaning supplies ( with the kind of fancy labels on them that make you want to buy whatever is in the bottle just because it looks pretty.)  There are also some shelves around the room displaying what seemed to be hand crafted items on consignment from local artisans.  It is such a cozy room that the kids started to get a little excited at all the "sensory candy." My daughter began skipping and singing about in this happy little place.  I was sad to have to discourage that, but let's face it, one good bump into the glass jewelry display and I would find myself working at that lovely bakery for months to pay for all the broken glass beads!  As if on cue, a nice young woman comes from the kitchen area of the bakery and greets us with a big smile.  We let her know that we are there to pick out some birthday cupcakes for my son's teacher.   She directs our attention to the array of cupcake delights that she has prepared.  We really wanted to pick out something fabulous because this teacher is phenomenal!!!!  Our attention is immediately drawn to what the baker called her "Over The Rainbow Cupcakes."  Here is a photo of this wonderful creation:

Now, how in the world could you resist that???  You could select vanilla or chocolate so we decided to get both because the decision was just to difficult for us.  We ended up picking up five of them for our favorite teacher and her family.   We also picked out some fabulous ones for ourselves:  two Shamrock Shakes, one Chocolate Peanut Butter, and one Lucky Charms!  The nice woman put the gift cupcakes in a bakery box and tied it up with a pretty red bow.  I paid for our purchases and went to pick up our coveted boxes, but much to my dismay the kids were already holding one box each.  This made me somewhat nervous of course, knowing that our lovingly prepared dreamy confections were in the hands of my two anxious kids, but I gave them the opportunity to try to get our boxes to the van.  There was a lot of pride exuding from those kids in getting to carry those boxes!  I am happy to say that boxes, kids, and Mom made it to the car safe and sound.

A few short minutes later we had arrived home and I parked the car in the driveway.  I barely had the car off and the kids were off into the house with the two bakery boxes!  You see, these kinds of treats are REALLY special around here.  My son is gluten, dairy, and soy free and my daughter is dairy and soy free.  We go the majority of the year, through holidays, birthday parties, and BBQ's not able to have what everyone else is eating.  It is a RARE occasion that I allow "cheating."  Well, the two cahoots knew they were about to strike gold and there was no turning back now.  I was left in the dust to carry in all the back packs, bags, and coats as they bellied up to the proverbial bar and dug into their precious contraband.

I set down the heavy load of paraphernalia and asked in my out-of-breath voice: "Can you try to eat just HALF???"  I was a little concerned as we were all going to the Fire Department later for a big meeting and, (yes, not my smartest parenting moment), I was concerned that I was prepping for a meltdown!  Now, mind you, my son has NEVER eaten a cupcake in it's entirety, EVER.  Not a regular one, not a gluten-free one....nothing.  The most he has done is eaten the frosting off the top.  hand, happily devouring the delicious treat.  He was saying something that sounded like: "Oh Mommy....I CAN'T!  It's so good I just HAVE to eat the WHOLE THING!"  This was a moment let me tell you.  Moms of picky eaters can relate right here I'm sure.  It was at that moment that I didn't feel bad about letting him cheat a little bit.  Every kid deserves to have a delicious cupcake in one's lifetime, wouldn't you agree?  Now I should note here that the baker told me they sell gluten-free and vegan cupcakes every Saturday.  Oh thank you lovely cakery lady, THANK YOU!!!!!

My daughter was a little more methodical with her devouring of her Chocolate Peanut Butter cupcake.  She ate only half so that she could have the rest later!  She enjoyed each delectable bite and was very surprised to find the shape of a circle inside her cupcake.  "Mom LOOK!", she said.  "There's the peanut butter!"  It did look delicious, but i didn't have the heart to ask her to let me try a bite.  Instead, I opened up the box to enjoy my own delight, the Shamrock Shake cupcake.  Oh yes...it was beyond good, and tasted every bit like a full-fledged Mc D's Shamrock Shake.  Yes, I bought the Hubs one too, but he hasn't had an opportunity to try it yet.  Hope he does before I feel the need to indulge again!

So glad that I decided to make a little detour yesterday afternoon.  Thinking how how blessed we are to have such a wonderful gourmet cakery so close to our home.  You've got to find those golden nuggets every day that bring a little joy to your life.  We found another one yesterday in Pixie Cakes.  Gourmet cupcakes are their specialty, but they also make high-end wedding cakes, birthday cakes, cake pops, and other delights.  Here's the link to their Facebook page.

The Vestal Rail Trail

So....today I tried out the infamous Vestal Rail Trail, located in the Town of Vestal, N.Y.  The children are taking a half-day basketball camp out that way until Thursday so I thought it would be a good opportunity to check out this famed running/walking/dog park/kids play area trail.

I arrived at about 9:30 A.M. and much to my surprise, there were a couple of parking places available!  I parked the car, grabbed the car key,  my IPhone for music, and I was ready to roll, or walk as the case may be.  I turned on Pandora and off I went.  I don't like to walk first and then run.  I like to take right off with an easy jog, because I get too bored with the walking and I'm always afraid that I will not start running if I'm already bored to tears.  The first song is not over and I find myself already looking at the time.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????  It's only been TWO MINUTES!   Oh boy, this is going to be a long 1 and 1/2 miles.
Then I start to notice a strange smell.  It is reminiscent of Eu De Toilet .... you know what I'm talking about?  Just a horrible, old, perfume-y, bathroom-spray annoying scent...uggg.  So, I decide to pick up the pace a bit to see if I can pass the offensive culprit.   At this point, I am only seeing walkers and dogs walking their humans so it will be actually possible to pass these folks.  Finally, after what seems like an eternity, I pass a woman with a white bee-hive in a white shirt.  Yes, she was definately the culprit.  What I'm wondering is...WHY???? Why does she feel the need to slather herself in perfume that dates back to prehistoric times?  Her scent lingered for at least five minutes behind her!   That was the LONGEST 5 minutes EVER!
At this point, I'm still not seeing any runners and I'm feeling like I missed the sign that said "Walker's and Puppy Poop Scoopers Only".  I'm not going to let it get me down though, the music is great and I just came upon the 3/4 mile marker.  FINALLY!  Just then, the smell of raw sewage fills the airspace.  How lovely for me...I'm wishing the Eu De Toilet Lady was not so far behind me.  I could really use her to drown out this dreadful odor.  I plod on thinking....Where the heck is the mile-marker sign?  I'm never going to make it!  At this point, my pelvic area and hips are screaming.  Running on this hard of a surface with basically no hills or turns is doing quite a number on my body.   I'm thinking...what is the big fuss about this so-called trail anyway?  There's not much to look at and it stinks....literally!
I keep going down the trail, even though I really wanted to stop.  I set a couple of mental goals as I was unfamiliar with the length of this trail and was seriously considering turning around.  I made it to the highway overpass which turned out to be the 5K turn-around.  I decided to do the turn-around and walk back to my starting point.  I had a whole day ahead of me and I was afraid of trying to accomplish things while in any more pain than I already was.
On my journey back, the only person that passed me was an older gentleman on one of those three-wheeled bikes.   He can really zoom along in that thing!  He was able to weave around people like he was buttering a slice of bread.   Finally, something exciting to watch.  Oh...(sigh)...he's gone now...
About halfway back to my starting point, I come upon some folks that I will name "The Stroller Brigade" A.K.A. "Trail Hoarder Moms".  On my way through, I noticed that everyone stayed on one side of the trail, and on the way back, returned on the opposite side.  Well, these ladies clearly have no trail etiquette whatsoever.  Right down the middle of the trail they come, with no regard to the other folks around them.  Clearly, the need for a dotted yellow line is presenting itself here.
After two sets of the renegade Moms go through, a series of "Canine Companions" litter the trail.  I took great pleasure in this brigade as I love dogs, and I got to see many breeds, and all shapes and sizes.  The littlest ones were the most entertaining and seemed to have the most control over their well-meaning human owners.  I saw a beautiful Eskimo dog, with the most amazing sea-blue eyes that you ever did see.  He needed a good brushing though :(.  A pleasant surprise sprinkled along the trail were a few friendly waves from "The Walkers".   I even got a half-smile from a "Canine Companion".   For New York, that's not half-bad.  I think that responsible and dedicated pet-ownership softens up even the hardest of souls. Well, even though I waked half of it, I completed a 5K today.  I have to say, I missed my country road that I usually run on.  The slight hills and familiar farm animals are much more enjoyable to me than the large droves of people and foul smells(and yes, that includes dodging the usual logging trucks and smell of horse and cow manure.)  Be that as it may, I am out in Vestal for the rest of the week, so yes, I will be back tomorrow for more fun and excitement.  I wonder what I will encounter then.....

MommyParties Picked Me To Host A Roman Town Party!

All of our great giveaways!!!

I was very happy to receive a HUGE box in the mail with all kinds of Roman Town Dig-It Games goodies inside!  We received 10 knit hats, 10 water bottles, and 10 coupons for free copies of the featured video game.  The box also included ideas for snacks and activities which I found to be very helpful.  The star of the show was the Roman Town educational video game which is considered "The Premier Archaeology Video Game For Kids."  To start off the party, I gave each child a bag to decorate which would later hold their free goodies from Roman Town.  I gave them a few ideas and their imaginations took over from there-they really enjoyed doing that!
We then went into the family room and divided the children in groups of two.  Working in pairs, the children each had a chance to explore the video game.  My husband connected the computer to the 52 inch tv, so it was super fun to explore on the big screen.  This allowed those in the group who were waiting for their turn an opportunity to watch what was going on as well.  The 8-year-olds in the group were able to use the game to its fullest, as they were able to read the text and follow the directions.  They especially enjoyed virtually "digging" for buried treasures with the "trowel."  The younger children enjoyed the "game feature" the best, particularly the game called "Calculi" which reminded me of a version of "Connect 4."  They couldn't get enough of that game!
After everyone had a turn or two with the video game, we had some snacks drank some "Fossil Juice", and packed our bags full with all the goodies from Roman Town.  The children really enjoyed the game and I believe this would be a perfect addition to anyone who is teaching children (8 and up) about archaeology.  Thanks to MommyParties and Roman Town for the opportunity to try this product!

Walk For Autism Virginia is Happening Soon!

http://www.firstgiving.com/findinglogan2010

My best friend Kolette is a supermom who has volunteered for this organization since its inception six years ago.  If you are looking for a worthwhile cause to donate to this season, this is the one!  Click on the link to read about the organization and Kolette's plight.  Events like this one help to raise the funds necessary for families with Autism to afford all of the expensive therapies and programs necessary for their children to succeed.  Her son Logan continues to amaze all of us with everything that he is able to do with talent and style!
You'll be reading more about Kolette and I and some of our adventures (well ones that I can post anyway...) in future posts on my blog.  Thank you for taking a look!

The Renovations Continue!

Well.....the downstairs Man Cave now has tile in it!  Woohoo!  Dear Husband will soon have the rec room of his dreams that he so deserves!!!  I will add a picture of it later as I have to mop the grout residue off of the floor first.  So....we now need to get it painted and then get all of our furniture in it so that we can use it!  I guess we could use it before, (as my husband kindly stated) but, I am a bit of a perfectionist and I REALLY needed the room to be 80% complete in order to feel comfortable in there.  I need to walk through it in order to get to our laundry room so it was really bugging me to not have it finished.  Also, I found that I really wasn't bothering to clean it much since things weren't "in order" so all of the hair left behind by my furry canine sons was getting a little out of control to say the least!  (I tend to avoid cluttered, messy areas as they give me claustrophobia and slight panic attacks...I guess this is why I put off cleaning Miss Tish's room till absolutely necessary...)

We used the same Interceramic brand tile that we used to complete our upstairs hallway back in February of this year.  The color is called Corinthian and it's found in their Flag Stone line.  It is a wonderful ceramic tile and we have been so happy with the quality!  The previous owners had carpet going down the narrow hallway and I didn't like how it broke up the flow of the home.  I felt that the length of the hallway was being visually compromised with the use of the carpet.  Also, trying to keep that cream-colored carpet clean would have been a nightmare!  Did I fail to mention that the home that we just bought was built in 1990, and I had the distinct pleasure of trying to match the tile that they placed in the foyer and kitchen with a new tile in the hallway?   I was determined to find a match for that 20-year-old tile and no other options would satisfy me.  Can you tell that I'm a bit of a pit bull?  Ya....love me or leave me I guess!  Anyway, I was unsuccessful in the search until I found Interceramic!  In our previous home, we had carpeting everywhere and would begrudgingly vacuum 20 times a day and still not have the floors as clean as I like them.  This tile is so easy to clean and makes our daily living with two kids and two dogs so much more enjoyable!  I can keep the dog hair and dirt at bay with just a few broom sweeps a day and one mopping a week!  Lovin the low maintenance!  O.K.... on with my mopping!

Side Note:  Thank you God for Ed and Tony our contractors.  Amen

A challenge plays!
